SAFETY FIRST IN YOUR BATHROOM

SAFETY FIRST IN YOUR BATHROOM

Safety first in your bathroom is always a major consideration when remodeling the space.

Accidents happen in bathrooms and these injuries are usually the result of wet and slippery surfaces that cause hazards.

Shower and bathroom safety not only helps the aged, it reduces the possibility of injuries in younger people and everyone in between as well. Here are some considerations to help transform the most dangerous room in the home into one of the safest.

Install Grab Bars & Shower Safety Handles

grab bar

To help with balance, you can install grab bars and shower safety handles in almost all areas of the bathroom.

Be aware that not all grab bars meet the exact specifications required to bear the weight of repeated usage. The length of the bar, the diameter, and the bar position are also factors you need to consider depending on who will be using them.

Grab bars are VERY cost effective and make bathrooms a lot safer when installed.

Use a Shower Chair

Often referred to as bath chairs, shower stools, or shower benches, they are available in a variety of sizes and often made of plastic with a non-rusting metal frame. Alternatively, choose a model of shower with a safety bench built right in as pictured above.

The bench can also be a relaxing way to enjoy a shower and increase overall confidence for everyone.

Install a Low Threshold Shower or Tub

A walk in low threshold shower reduces trips and falls and is easy for any age range to access their daily hygiene routine!

There are many cost effective and attractive models available these days. Low access tubs are also an option if a bathtub is preferred.

Avoid Slippery Mats

Using bathroom mats might add comfort but if they are unsecured with a firm backing or roll up on the edges can be a high risk trip and fall item.

Make sure any floor mats have well established stick bottoms that do not move when stepped on.

Flooring

Tiles can be a slippery option, even though favoured in the past as a bathroom staple. Today’s options to consider include: non-slip vinyl, linoleum, or bamboo and cork flooring.

Rough textured tub or shower floors are also a consideration for safety.

Keep Things Conveniently Placed

Probably the quickest and easiest way to make a bathroom safer is to make sure things are within an easy reach. Shampoos, soaps, conditioners, and other toiletry items need to be removed from high, hard-to-reach places and placed at body level. The shower pictured above features easy to reach built in shelves for all the daily needs.

Lighting

Replace existing low-light bulbs with brighter bulbs to create a more comfortable and visible environment.

Hand-Held Shower Head

Having the correct shower equipment can help reduce the risk of falling in the shower or bathtub while reaching.

Consider a longer shower hose length for extra movement. A hand-held showerhead is a simple-to-install idea for increased shower safety.

Curtains and Glass

Consider a weighted shower curtain that will help keep it in place and reduce water splash.

If your tub or shower is glass consider replacing them with safety glass. You don’t want glass doors shattering and causing serious injuries.
